LING, PER HENRIK (1776–1839), Swedish medical-gymnastic practitioner, son of a minister, was born at Ljunga in the south of Sweden in 1776. He studied divinity, and took his degree in 1797, but then went abroad for some years, first to Copenhagen, where he taught modern languages, and then to Germany, France and England. Pecuniary straits injured his health, and he suffered much from rheumatism, but he had acquired meanwhile considerable proficiency in gymnastics and fencing. In 1804 he returned to Sweden, and established himself as a teacher in these arts at Lund, being appointed in 1805 fencing-master to the university. He found that his daily exercises had completely restored his bodily health, and his thoughts now turned towards applying this experience for the benefit of others. Pehr Henrik Ling
Swedish massage therapist and teacher (1776–1839)
Pehr Henrik Ling (15 November 1776 – 3 May 1839)[1] pioneered the teaching of physical education in Sweden. Ling is credited as the father of Swedish massage.
Early life
Ling was born in Södra Ljunga, Småland in 1776. His parents were Lars Peter Ling, a minister, and Hedvig Maria (Hedda) Molin. On his maternal side, Ling was the great-great grandson of the famous Swedish scientist Olof Rudbeck (1630–1702), who discovered the human lymphatic system. His family tree extends back to the sixteenth century and includes clergymen and peasants. His great grandfather apparently lived to 105 and had seventeen sons and two daughters.[2] After graduating from the Växjögymnasium in 1792, he studied theology at Lund University from 1793, completing his degree at Uppsala University in 1799.[1] He then worked as a tutor for several families for the next three years.[3]

Even in some way controversial, Ling is widely considered the "Father of Massage". Like many massage therapists and body workers today, he used his own knowledge and experience with pain and injury to craft methods and techniques that shaped the basis of his practice and, ultimately, of massage itself.
