Tewolde GebreMariam Tesfay (Amharic: ተወልደ ገብረማርያም ተስፋይ) is an Ethiopian business executive[1][2] who served as the group chief executive officer of the Ethiopian Airlines Group from 2011 to 2022.[3][4]
Background and education
Tewolde GebreMariam is an Ethiopian national. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, obtained from Addis Ababa University. His second degree was a Master of Business Administration degree, obtained from the Open University, in the United Kingdom. He has also received an honorary doctorate from Addis Ababa University in 2019.[5]
He served as Executive Officer of Marketing & Sales to head the Marketing and Sales Operations of Ethiopian in 2004. On July 1, 2006, he was appointed as chief operating officer of Ethiopian to head all the operating divisions of the airline Commercial, Flight Operations, Customer Services and Maintenance and Engineering. Ethiopian Airlines board chairman Girma Wake– Yilma Merdasa, Airforce Chief, replaced him
Girma Wake, the former board chairperson of Ethiopian Airlines, has left his position, with federal authorities yet to disclose the reason for his departure. Girma himself confirmed to The Reporter that he is no longer serving in the role, but refused to elaborate on the circumstances surrounding his exit from the company.
Yilma Merdasa, Commander of the Ethiopian Airforce, replaced him as the Board Chairperson of Ethiopian Airlines, sources told The Reporter.
Girma joined the Ethiopian Airlines board in 2018 and became board chairman in April 2022 when Mesfin Tasew was appointed as group CEO, replacing Tewolde Gebremariam. During his tenure, Girma played a pivotal role in expanding the airline’s reach to 114 international destinations, making it the largest carrier in Africa.
