Biography of the author
Nancy Horowitz Kleinbaum, the author of Dead Poets Society, is an American writer and journalist (“N.H. Kleinbaum,” n.d.). She attended Northwestern University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism before pursuing a master’s degree in American Studies, History, and Literature at Columbia University Kleinbaum is most well-known for her adaptation of films and television shows to novels. She authored D.A.R.Y.L. in 1985, Growing Pains: A Novel between 1985 and 1992, The Magnificent Seven: The Authorized Story of American Gold in 1996, and Dr. Doolittle in 1998 (“NH Kleinbaum,” n.d.). She wrote Dead Poets Society in 1989 based on the screenplay by Tom Schulman (“N.H. Kleinbaum,” n.d.).
Kleinbaum is married and the mother of three children. She lived in Mount Kisco, New York when she was writing Dead Poets Society. Now, she lives in Newtown, Connecticut. She also worked as a journalist for “Lifestyles” magazine during her career (“NH Kleinbaum,” n.d.).
