Stephanie D. Wilson is a veteran of three spaceflights, STS-121 in 2006, STS-120 in 2007, and STS-131 in 2010 and has logged more than 42 days in space. Born in Boston, she attended high school in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, earned her Bachelor of Science in Engineering Science from Harvard University in 1988, and earned her Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering in 1992 from the University of Texas at Austin. Wilson has served as the Space Station Integration Branch Chief from 2010 to 2012, the Mission Support Crew Branch Chief from 2018 to 2020, and Deputy of the Assigned Crew Branch from 2021-2023. In 2013, she completed a 9-month detail to NASA’s Glenn Research Center as the Acting Chief of Program and Project Integration in the Spaceflight Systems Directorate.

NASA has announced its intent to send the first woman and the first person of color to the Moon during the Artemis program. That may happen on the Artemis II or Artemis III mission within the next few years, if the uncrewed Artemis I flight occurs in 2022 as currently planned.
One likely candidate is Stephanie Diana Wilson, NASA’s most senior, most flown-in-space African American female astronaut. Selected to become an astronaut in 1996, she became the second Black woman in space, flying on three Space Shuttle missions to the International Space Station (ISS) and logging 42 days in orbit. Wilson is now one of 18 members of the Artemis astronaut team, a group of nine men and nine women from diverse backgrounds. She has been an astronaut longer than anyone else on the team and has flown more times than all but one of them. Her odds of earning a spot on a four-person Artemis crew seem good.

Stephanie Diana Wilson (born September 27, 1966)[1] is an American engineer and a NASAastronaut. She flew to space onboard three Space Shuttle missions, and is the second African American woman to go into space, after Mae Jemison. As of 2022,[update] her 42 days in space are the second most of any female African American astronaut, having been surpassed by Jessica Watkins in 2022.
Early life and education
Stephanie Wilson was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on September 27, 1966.
