Ten autographed photos hang behind the lunch counter at the Tomahawk Restaurant, a wood-panelled temple of kitsch-cool in North Vancouver. Famous for its Native-obsessed décor, the Lower Mainland institution has hosted celebrities from the Rolling Stones to Rod Stewart since opening its doors in 1926. Pierre and Maggie Trudeau stopped by once but left when told they'd have to wait for a table like everybody else. Later in the '70s, a greasy-haired kid named Bryan Adams toiled away in the dish pit.
You won't find any of the aforementioned on the Tomahawk's wall of fame. Instead, the framed and signed shots are from the likes of MacGyver's Richard Dean Anderson, stone-faced Canuck comic Leslie Nielsen, and broadcasting veteran Terry David Mulligan. It's the picture on the far left that stands out the most, though, and not just because it's of Nardwuar the Human Serviette in the hospital. Nardwuar the Human Serviette[3][2] (born John Andrew Vernon Ruskin, July 5, 1968), or simply Nardwuar, is a Canadian celebrity journalist and musician.[4] He formed the Vancouver-based garage rock band the Evaporators in 1986, for which he serves as lead singer and keyboardist.[5]
Nardwuar got his start in media at the University of British Columbia radio station, CITR 101.9 FM.[6] His show has run from each Friday afternoon[7] since October 1987. The program features a mix of eclectic music, along with interviews and commentary. Nardwuar's interviews have frequently been shown on MuchMusic's Going Coastal, and printed in Chart. Although Nardwuar most frequently interviews musicians, he has stated that he may interview any celebrity.[8] He often appears as a guest interviewer on CBC Radio 3, and began his own weekly program on WFMU in 2009, which ran until 2013.[9]
