Mr. Janus Nolasco, University Researcher @ UP Asian Center, delivered a presentation, “Somewhere Between Area, Empire, and Transnation: The Transformation of Area Studies in the 21st Century,” at the 2018 International Conference of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Busan University of Foreign Studies, held from 11 to 12 May 2018 at the Busan University of Foreign Studies, Busan, Republic of Korea.
ABSTRACT/HIGHLIGHTS
In this paper, Mr. Nolasco argues "how the collective reflections of Filipino-American scholars on empire, migration, diaspora, and identity, along with global, transpacific, and transnational perspectives, point to the consolidation and viability of the transnational/transpacific as an area, which spans both the United States and the Philippines, and by extension Southeast Asia. The Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts (XCCA) and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) held YAMUG 6: Culture Based Education Symposium on October 19, 8 am to 4:30 pm at the XU Little Theater.
This year’s Yamug focused on Philippine Culture and the Arts as bases for effective and quality education. Topics and speakers included Philippine Culture and the Arts – Effective Tool for Teaching and Learning by Prof Ricamela Palis (Letran); Mother Tongue Based Multilingual Education in the Philippines by Dr Jovy M Peregrino (UP Diliman) and Mindanao Folk Literature a Cultural Wealth and Knowledge by Dr Christine Godinez-Ortega (MSU-IIT).
Yamug 6 was part of the Cultural Education Program of XCCA. It was attended by more than 100 participants, mostly students from different schools in the city, including from the Caraga.
