Key People: Robert Vandall, Part 1

Crystal Desch and I recently interviewed Robert D. Vandall by phone.  Robert Vandall is one of this country’s most prolific and popular composers of educational piano music.  He and his wife, Karen, operate a thriving independent piano studio in New Philadelphia, Ohio.

You’ve had a long and full career in music, most notably as a piano teacher and clinician. How are you different today as a teacher compared to when you began your career?

I think I am much, much better.  My wife Karen and I have talked about this a lot.  We are so much more knowledgeable.  We understand kids more.  We know more about pedagogy.  Nothing beats experience.  I think piano teachers only get better as they get older.

We were intrigued by something you said in a past interview with Keyboard Companion magazine: “I never make judgments about students.  I see struggling pianists as individuals, who simply need a lot from me.”  Tell us more.

Robert Vandall (1944-     )

Robert Vandall earned his B.M. in Piano Performance from Baldwin-Wallace College, and his M.M. in Piano Performance from the University of Illinois. His writing and arranging of piano education materials has come directly from contact with his own students. Vandall's demand as a clinician has led he and his wife, Karen, to present workshops in over 30 states. His compositions appear on many piano teacher organizations required lists. He holds Permanent Professional Certification as a member of Music Teachers National Association and is an active member of the Ohio Music Teachers Assocation. He also is past president of the Tuscarawas County Music Teachers Association, is an MTNA Foundation Fellow from Ohio, and is an active member of the Fortnightly Music Club of New Philadelphia, affiliated with the National Federation of Music Clubs. He and his wife are counselors of a Junior Federated music club.
