Mossman's early career included a tour of Europe with Anthony Braxton in 1978 and tours with Roscoe Mitchell in the early 1980s. He also did session work in the 1980s, for Styx among others. He played with Lionel Hampton, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, and Machito before joining the Blue Note Records ensemble Out of the Blue in 1985. Following this he worked with Toshiko Akiyoshi, Horace Silver (1989–91), Gerry Mulligan (1992), Dizzy Gillespie, Slide Hampton, Michel Camilo, Mario Bauza, Eddie Palmieri, and the Philip Morris Superband. He has also appeared in the documentary Calle 54 (2000).
Mossman's recent activity includes a Grammy nomination in 2013 for Best Instrumental Arrangement for his Afro-Latin Suite for Ellington recorded on Bobby Sanabria's "Multiverse" album. His work with Academy Award winning director Fernando Trueba includes scoring music for the Academy Awar

Michael Philip Mossman
Michael Philip Mossman has been active on the international scene since the age of 17. Michael has performed and recorded with his own groups and with bands led by a virtual who's who of the music industry. He is lead trumpeter with Jazz at Lincoln Center's Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra and is featured as lead trumpet and arranger on their Grammy winning album, Song for Chico, as well as on Un Noche Inolvidable and 40 Acres and a Burro. Solo releases by Michael include Springdance, Mama Soho, The Orisha Suite, Misa Afro-Cubana, Soul con Timba Live at Bohemian Cavern and Mambo Nights, with guest Arturo Sandoval. Each features Michael's much sought after work as composer/arranger in Afro-Cuban and Brazilian jazz.
Following stints as lead trumpet with the Machito Orchestra, Toshiko Akiyoshi and the Lionel Hampton Orchestra, Michael became the musical director of Blue Note Records’ "Young Lion" group, Out of the Blue.
