Biography
Noted for his keen musical intelligence, imaginative programming, and charisma, Ken-David Masur is in his sixth season as both music director of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and principal conductor of the Chicago Symphony’s Civic Orchestra. His tenure in Milwaukee has been notable for innovative thematic programming, including the Water Festival, which highlighted community partners whose work centers on water conservation and education, and last season’s inaugural city-wide Bach Festival, celebrating the abiding appeal of J.S. Bach’s music in an ever-changing world. In the 2024–25 season, which celebrates the eternal interplay between words and music, he continues an artist residency with bass-baritone Dashon Burton and conducts Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. In Chicago, Masur leads the Civic Orchestra in a variety of programs, including an annual Bach Marathon.
This summer Masur made his Oregon Bach Festival conducting debut and returned to the Tanglewood Festival, leading the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) in both a John Williams

Ken-David Masur (born 1977[1]) is a German-born American conductor.
Biography
Born in Leipzig of Japanese and German ancestry, Masur is the son of conductor Kurt Masur and Masur's third wife, the soprano Tomoko Sakurai. He began piano studies at age 6. Masur was also a boy soprano, and sang with the Gewandhaus Children's Choir at age 9.[2] He later obtained a formal vocal education at the Hanns Eisler Conservatory in Berlin, where his teachers included Thomas Quasthoff. During his father's tenure with the New York Philharmonic, Masur attended the Music Conservatory of Westchester, where he studied trumpet.[2] He subsequently attended Columbia University, where he established the Bach Society Orchestra and Chorus, and served as its first music director from 1999 to 2002.[3][4] He graduated from Columbia in 2002.[5]
