David Muench has photographed some of the most spectacular landscapes of the world in a career spanning more than 60 years. His images and books have inspired countless landscape photographers and travelers and, according to Muench, brought meaning to his life.
“Photography is an extension of my eye,” Muench said. “I see, therefore I understand better. What I see and what I photograph is the timeless moment—that moment existing between past and future; that moment that is—in the photograph—eternal.”
Muench’s photographs will soon be positioned to provide timeless inspiration to not only his fans but also students, researchers, teachers and others, thanks to his donation of his photographic legacy to Special Collections and Archives at Northern Arizona University’s Cline Library.

David Muench (born June 25, 1936) is an American landscape and nature photographer known for portraying the American western landscape.[1] He is the primary photographer for more than 60 books and his work appears in many magazines, posters, and private collections.
Career
Muench was born on June 25, 1936, in Santa Barbara, California. Muench has been a freelance photographer since the 1950s with his formal schooling including the Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York, The University of California at Santa Barbara and the Art Center School of Design, Los Angeles.[2]
His first Arizona Highways cover was published in January 1955 at the age of 18,[3] and he has continued to work with the magazine since then.[4] In December 2015, to celebrate seven decades of collaboration, Arizona Highways dedicated an entire issue of the magazine to Muench, the first time they had done so for a single person.[5]

Cline Library Special Collections and Archives (SCA) on the campus of Northern Arizona University is thrilled to announce the arrival of the David Muench Photography Records. David Muench is one of the preeminent 20th and 21st century American landscape photographers, and his collection represents over 70 years of landscape photography from around the world. David made millions of photographs during his career and today, continues to make photographs. He is an influential innovator of landscape photography; his eye and instincts have resulted in some of the most remarkable photographs of both iconic locations and those known only to a few. The gift of David’s collection significantly expands and raises awareness of SCA’s visual material holdings and complements several other remarkable 20th and 21st century American landscape photography collections in the department’s holdings.
