Fred Travalena dies at 66; master impressionist and singer

Fred Travalena, the master impressionist and singer whose broad repertoire of voices ranged from Jack Nicholson to Sammy Davis Jr. to Bugs Bunny, has died. He was 66.

Travalena, who began treatment for an aggressive form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2002 and saw the disease return last July after going into remission in 2003, died Sunday at his home in Encino, according to his publicist, Roger Neal. Travalena also was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2003 but had been in complete remission since then.

Dubbed “The Man of a Thousand Faces” and “Mr. Everybody,” Travalena emerged on the national stage as an impressionist in the early 1970s.

Over the next three decades, he was a headliner in Las Vegas, Reno and Atlantic City, performed in concerts across the country, appeared on “The Tonight Show” and other talk shows and starred in his own specials, such as “The Many Faces of Fred Travalena” and “Comedy in the Oval Office.”

Fred is not only an impressionist and comedian.  He is also a talented musical artist with a voice of his own.  His CD, "We All Need Love Today", has been very popular since it's release in 1998. On it, Fred performed 16 songs, of which 11 are Fred Travalena originals. "After so many years of using the voices of other singers, it really is a treat and a long time dream fulfilled to be able to be myself and to sing my own songs", comments Fred.

In addition, Fred's newly released single, "Christmas in Manhattan" is being developed into a full-length Christmas album. Also in the works is a music book of all of Fred's original songs.

Frederick Albert Travalena III[1] (October 6, 1942 – June 28, 2009) was an American entertainer, specializing in comedy and impressions.

Early life

Bronx, New York-born and Long Island-raised,[2] Travalena moved to Los Angeles and developed a multifaceted career with his characterizations of visible public figures.

Career

His television credits began in the 1970s, as a regular performer on The ABC Comedy Hour, where he once did a split screen impression of John Lennon on one side and Paul McCartney on the other, and the Dean Martinroasts. He had several voice credits on cartoons, as well as appearances on nationally broadcast children's programs.

Travelena made many guest appearances on game shows and dramatic programs in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. In the mid-1980s he hosted the game show Anything for Money (1984–85), a game where contestants attempted to guess how much money it would take an ordinary, unsuspecting person to participate in a silly stunt.
