Three years on from her Italian debut in 2007 at Monitor, the gallery is pleased to present a second solo show of Ursula Mayer with the captivating title Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight.
Mayers most recent investigation of film dismantles elements of cinematic narratives. Each of her film is interrupted with numerous flashbacks and challenges to the cinematic convention of temporal linearity, leading her to question the production of imagery.
Infused with references of the avant-garde her films explore the possibilities of performative and theatrical staging. The artist has also developed a body of sculpture parallel to her enquiries into moving-image.
Together they create a rich web of storylines, providing a terracing of perspectives on history. 16th Istanbul Biennial, Turkey

The 16th Istanbul Biennial opened on 14th September 2019 and was curated by French writer, curator and scholar Nicolas Bourriaud. The biennial, titled The Seventh Continent, invited Austrian artist Ursula Mayer to participate with a multi-media installation. For the second consecutive edition, Phileas collaborated with the biennial to co-produce the commission and exhibition of new works by an Austrian artist.
Ursual Mayer (born 1970 in Austria) is a multi-media artist whose practice spans a variety of media, including: film, video, and sculpture. She has had exhibitions at the Whitechapel Gallery, London; the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London and the Centraal Museum, Utrecht. She has also been included in exhibitions at the Kunsthalle Basel, at the RCM Art Museum in Nanjing.

The film Atom Spirit is a speculative narrative set in a near future of increasing biomedical innovation. The film, set in and made with the LGBT community in Trinidad & Tobago, follows the work of a group of evolutionary geneticists studying and collecting DNA from all forms of life in order to create a cryogenically frozen Ark. The video presents a cyborgian future of techno- science in which the residual resonances of extinct civilisations is still felt. Through blending science and mythology Atom Spirit ruminates upon the effects of computational and biological technologies on future iterations of humanity and the environment.
Ursula Mayer’s installation The Fire of Knowledge Burns All Karma to Ashes is an HD video loop depicting a digital, idling avatar of a real-life figure: the trans model Valentijn de Hingh. In video games, characters often fall into scripted, repetitive, idle activities – such as breathing or foot stamping – when they are not directed by a player.
