Carmen samaranch biography

Samaranch comes from a wealthy industrial family. After attending a German school in Barcelona, Samaranch studied business administration in England and the United States. At the same time he received manager training. In the 1940s, Samaranch became a member of President Franco's "Movimiento Nacional", whose staunch supporter he remained until Franco's death in 1975. He found sporting interest in tennis, boxing and figure skating. He was active in roller hockey for Espanol Barcelona. As head of organization for the roller hockey World Cup tournaments in Barcelona in 1951 and 1954 and as a city councilor responsible for the sports department, he earned an early reputation as a sports official. In 1954, Samaranch became a member of the Spanish NOC before holding its chairmanship from 1967 to 1970.

As head of the mission, Samaranch took over the representative accompaniment of the Spanish Olympic team in 1956, 1960 and 1964. From 1962 he acted as a sports delegate for Catalonia, and in 1966 Samaranch was appointed as a member of the International Olympic Committ

HAVANA, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Cubans Carmen Laura Contreras and Elizabeth Zambrano fell in love with the Chinese language for different reasons, but their paths crossed on Friday when they won the Chinese Bridge Contest 2019 for university and high school students.

Contreras, 24, is pursuing a bachelor's degree in history at the University of Havana. She was the winner among the university students, while 15-year-old Zambrano triumphed in the high school category.

Both will be defending the Confucius Institute in Havana at the end of next July in China, where the semifinal and the final of the contest will be held.

The contest has been sponsored since 2002 by Hanban, the General Office of Mandarin Chinese.

The two young women had to overcome a dozen contestants at the theater of the University of Havana, where they were evaluated by a rigorous jury.

The four Spaniards had little success in the individual round, with only one qualifying for the elimination matches. He lost in the first round. The men's team, however, surprised the world by pulling off four upsets to claim the gold medal—Spain's first archery medal—in front of a home crowd.
