Cradle of Filth
English extreme metal band
Cradle of Filth are an English extreme metal band formed in Suffolk in 1991. The band's musical style evolved originally from black metal to a cleaner and more "produced" amalgam of gothic metal, symphonic metal and other metal genres. Their lyrical themes and imagery are heavily influenced by Gothic literature, poetry, mythology and horror films. The band consists of its founding member, vocalist Dani Filth, drummer Martin "Marthus" Škaroupka, bassist Daniel Firth, guitarists Marek "Ashok" Šmerda and Donny Burbage, and keyboardist Zoe Marie Federoff.
The band has broken free from its original niche by courting mainstream publicity. This increased accessibility has brought coverage from the likes of Kerrang! and MTV, along with frequent main stage appearances at major festivals such as Ozzfest, Download and even the mainstream Sziget Festival. Formed in 1991 in England, Cradle Of Filth spent two years producing demos, such as Invoking the Unclean (1992), Orgiastic Pleasures (1992) and Total Fucking Darkness (1993). The album immediately established them at the top of the black-metal pyramid.
With a new keyboardist and singer-guitarist Stuart Anstis, the band released the six-song mini-album Vampire or Dark Faerytales in Phallestein (Cacophonous, 1996), mainly for contractual obligations, and finally their masterpiece, Dusk and Her Embrace (Music For Nations, 1997). By fusing heavy metal and progressive-rock, Cradle Of Filth achieved a kind of epic gothic that recalls more King Crimson than Venom (the instrumental The Graveyard By Moonlight).
After more internal turmoil, the band

Dani Filth: My Life Story
WHEN AND WHERE WERE YOU BORN? “July 25, 1973. Hertford. Arse end of nowhere. We always lived in the countryside. It’s nice being a kid, growing up in that sort of environment.”
THERE CAN’T HAVE BEEN MUCH EXPOSURE TO EXTREME METAL IN A PLACE LIKE THAT.
“You’d be surprised. At 12 I got my first compilation tape from a friend, which was a really eclectic mix. It had stuff like Plasmatics on it, Stormwitch and AC/DC and the first song on it was Evil Has No Boundaries by Slayer. It was just like, ‘Whoa, bloody ‘ell!’. But because it was such a weird mix, I didn’t find any differences between things, you know? I think that’s kind of stuck with me. The transcending of genres – or the blurring of ’em.”
WHAT CAME FIRST – METAL OR HORROR FILMS?
“Horror films. Thriller came out by Michael Jackson, and everybody was into it! I remember that and the smoggy, cigarette-stained video stores, y’know? Where all the covers are yellow from them chuffin&rsq
