S Ramanathan: A musicologist who shunned the rulebook, embraced innovation
A child prodigy, Ramanathan was a topper in school, but he chose music over other avenues. Greatly inspired by Gopalakrishna Bharathi’s song "Chidambaram Pogamal Iruppeno", Ramanathan moved to Chidambaram at an early age to learn music at Annamalai University. He learned from gurus, who themselves were disciples of the musical trinity — Thyagaraja, Dikshithar and Syama Sastri.

April 8th marks the 87th birth anniversary of the great musician-musicologist-scholar-composer, the legendary Sangita Kalanidhi Dr. S. Ramanathan. What better way to remember him than to hear his soulful music, that gives us glimpses into his simplicity, erudition and sound interpretation of the classics of the masters:

S. Ramanathan (1917-1988) was a Carnatic music singer and musicologist. He was awarded the Sangeetha Kalanidhi title in 1985 by Madras Music Academy.

Post this, he also trained under Vidwan Valadi Krishnaiyer known as "Kirthana Kutir" - Granary of Kirthanas for vocal music and Devakottai Narayana Iyengar for the veena and acquired proficiency in both fields.
He received a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut, where he also taught.[1]
