Heber Manning Wells (* 11. August1859 in Salt Lake City, Utah; † 12. März1938) war ein US-amerikanischerPolitiker (Republikanische Partei) und der erste Gouverneur des Bundesstaates Utah.
Frühe Jahre und politischer Aufstieg

Der Vater war Bürgermeister von Salt Lake City und Apostel der Kirche Jesu Christi der Heiligen der Letzten Tage und Leiter der Nauvoo Legion, einer Vorgängerorganisation der späteren Nationalgarde von Utah. Zu seinen zahlreichen Geschwistern zählten der Bruder Briant Wells (1871–1949), ein Generalmajor der United States Army, und die Frauenrechtlerin Elizabeth Anne Wells Cannon (1859–1942).

HEBER MANNING WELLS was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. After attending the University of Deseret (now the University of Utah), he became a tax collector in Salt Lake City and then served as City Recorder from 1882 to 1890. After an unsuccessful bid to become Mayor of Salt Lake City, he secured the Republican nomination for governor and was elected to office upon the admission of Utah as a state, first for a five-year term and then for a second term of four years. As Utah’s first governor, Wells was concerned with organizing state government and transitioning from territorial to state status. Although interested in promoting economic development, he recognized the need to protect Utah’s natural environment and therefore campaigned to establish forest reserves. After leaving office, he became Managing Director of the Utah Savings and Trust Company. From 1913 to 1917 he served as Commissioner of Parks and Property in Salt Lake City and in 1919 he became an editor of the Salt Lake City Herald. Heber Manning Wells (August 11, 1859 – March 12, 1938) was an American politician and banker who served as the first governor of the State of Utah. Utah gained statehood on January 4, 1896; Wells served as governor from January 6, 1896, until January 2, 1905.
Biography
Wells was born in Salt Lake City on August 11, 1859, a son of Daniel H. Wells and Martha Givens (Harris) Wells.[1] He was a descendant of two Connecticut governors, Thomas Welles[2] and John Webster. His father was a prominent figure in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who served as mayor of Salt Lake City.[1] Wells' siblings included Briant H. Wells, a major general in the United States Army.[3] Heber Wells attended the schools of Salt Lake City, graduated from the University of Utah in 1875 and began a career in banking and local government.[1]
Career
Wells was manager of the Utah Savings & Trust Company and a director of the State Bank of Utah.[1
