Early Life
Hansen was born on September 13, 1959 in Chicago, Illinois. Hansen grew up in the northern Detroit suburbs of West Bloomfield and Birmingham. Hansen attended Brother Rice High School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. In an interview with the Lansing Chris Hansen had an interest in investigative reporting from a young age. As a fourteen year old, Hansen watched the FBI and police investigate the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa and that inspired him to want to become a journalist. Brother Hansen graduated from Michigan State University College of Communication Arts and Sciences in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications. Chris became a reporter for Lansing NBC affiliate WILX in 1981 during his senior year at Michigan State. He then reported for various radio stations and newspapers in Michigan until he joined NBC News in 1993 as a correspondent for the newsmagazine Now with Tom Brokaw and Katie Couric. Brother Hansen is most known for his reporting on the NBC news show, Dateline. Some of his most notable work includes coverage of the Columbine massacre, the Oklahoma City terrorist attack, the Unabomber, and the TWA Flight 800 disaster. In March 2008, he founded Valiant Capital Management, a San Francisco, California-based global long/short equity hedge fund that had $2.7 billion in assets in 2012.[1] Valiant Capital Management was included in a 2021 Department of Justice list of 20/30 short sellers being investigated. [2] Hansen grew up in Seattle, Washington, after his family moved there when he was six years old.[3] Hansen served as an analyst and a partner at Montgomery Securities and Blue Ridge Capital in San Francisco.[4] He was Managing Director at Blue Ridge for 7 years, from 2001 to 2008.[3] After leaving Blue Ridge, Hansen founded Valiant Capital, where he is currently president and portfolio manager.
