Jessye Norman was a Grammy Award-winning operatic singer, humanitarian, and Howard alumna known for her powerful voice and stage presence. She was born in 1945 in Augusta, Georgia to a musical family that nurtured her budding talent. Growing up in the Jim Crow South, Norman helped to integrate local businesses, participating in sit-ins at segregated lunch counters. At the age of 16, Norman’s performance at a vocal competition earned her a full scholarship to Howard University. She graduated from Howard in 1967 with a degree in music, then went on to complete her graduate education at the Peabody Conservatory and later at the Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. Over the course of her lifetime, she earned several honorary degrees from a number of other prestigious institutions.

Kariyeri
[değiştir | kaynağı değiştir]Sanatçı dramatik soprano olarak besteci Richard Wagner'in eserlerinde sahne aldı.[4] Norman başarılı opera kariyeriyle "Georgia Müzik Emektarları Şeref Listesi" 'ne girmiş, ayrıca Grammy Ödülü, Spingarn Madalyası, Grammy Yaşam Boyu Başarı Ödülü ve Ulusal Sanat Madalyası sahibidir.[5]
Norman 1970 yılında İtalya'da ilk defa sahneye çıkmıştır. Sahnede besteci George Frideric Handel'in Deborah adlı eserini seslendirdi. Daha sonra Maggio Müzikali'nde sahne alarak L'Africaine adlı esere hayat verdi.[6][7]

Early years
Jessye Norman was born on September 15, 1945, in Augusta, Georgia. Her father, Silas, was an insurance broker and her mother, Janie, was a schoolteacher. There were four other children in the family. Music was very important in the family, and all the children took piano lessons at a young age. Her parents encouraged Jessye musically, and she began singing in church choirs at the age of four.
Norman's first step toward a singing career, taken at the suggestion of her high school chorus teacher, was to enter the Marion Anderson vocal competition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at age sixteen. She did not win the competition, but her singing did gain her a full scholarship to Howard University in Washington, D.C.
